    hey guys,
i recently opened a new webmaster forum and i just wondering how to get(blackhat, whitehat, ect.) the site jump off. i have been tried many amateur techniques(with my first website) but seems that they aren't so effective. my goal is not adsense, pr or any google financial scheme but the site life's spark. all i want is approx. 500 active members. please, post your suggestions or even offer your help. note: as i newbie my wallet is so empty  so please forgive me for this volunteering mission. thank you so much for your time.

Can be hard to kick start a new forum. Need good post and get a few interested members and then it just grows based on membership and content. Target other forums for ppl interested in your forums topic. Maybe offer an incentive for members to help recruit.

Hold a contest on your forum, give away something and it'll kick start itself

    dude try this :

first just try to get in members by doing anything like giving gifts or contest( as suggested by kidblogger) then make your forum an invite only. I am sure this will work because I tried it once and it worked but there is no money from forums nowadays.

You're kidding right? If you have a popular board with good SEO you can turn a profit easily....

    1. "Help! We can't afford the hosting. Please donate...."
    2. "Upgrade your account for $10 and receive special benefits like custom title etc". People soak that up, just look at BHW with the Jnr VIP section :p
    3. Sell advertising space privately or use Adwords etc
    4. Plenty of BH methods like CS work well too.

My personal favourite are Q&A forums where you need a question answering and they make you pay $1 for the answer. Whoever thought that one up must be loaded.

hey guys, thank you so much for helping me out with the ideas. just to answer the oceanman's question is as i stated a webmaster discussion forum and since the site is brand new i think the website mainstream will be a little bit later directed. btw, i really plan to make a giveaway, but i don't think it's well enough. i'm considering paying The federal minimum wage of 7.00/h to a student staying in front of The New York Public Library since there's a main young people's crossover giving a flyers. but, i'll continuing looking for fresh and alternative ideas from all of us here at BHW forums.
    thank you once again.

This ~might~ work if you topic is either very broad or somehow localized to NYC.

A cheaper option is to buy traffic from various places (PPC, banner, contextual linking) and drive it to blogs...

I would setup a bunch of blogs that give a little bit of info a way free and ultimately funnels people into your membership sales process... Even better would be to create separate opt-in lists for each blog and track exactly which blog is generating the leads.

    I wouldn't call this blackhat though :)

As for seeding the forums, inviting people that you believe will contribute... incentivize this by making it free for the first batch of members.

I used to have a semi-active forum (about 100 active members).

This is what I did to get members:

    Held Contests That Promoted Activity:
This requires a little (or lot) of money. I would give away $30-$50 a month to the most active user (I made about $60 though adsense per/m). I also gave away free digital products like a Photoshop Serial Code (keep it legal)

    Add Exclusive Content:
The theme of my forum was Adobe Flash so I had exclusive tutorials and collaboration forums to be like a free incentive to join. Make a downloads section!

    Build Links (NOT Adsense):
I promoted my forum through other forums and affiliation/link exchanges. I also got lots of traffic from tutorial directories. I DID use adsense. I lost like $200

Get Partnerships with SUCCESSFUL Blogs in the Same Niche:
This is probably the BEST way to get traffic! It might cost some money to get a link. Look into it.

wow. all this makes me wish I still had my forum. I really liked it. I about $800 with it though. haha, I didn't know anything about being a webmaster (actually that's not true, I had a website before it, but I was still very unexperienced). That was about 2-3 years ago I think.

Make a script which will steal content from different forums

If I were in your place ( don't have a time to spend fot that) I would make a script which would randomly steal content from digitalpoint, warriorforum etc and then post to my own site ( you may want to digg up some old threads). Leave some questions unanswered, some answered. Make hundreds of accounts and make many posts so that next time someone visits your forum thinks why the fuck has he never seen this great forum before!

Find all releated forums (Blogging, webmasters, affiliate, internet marketing, black hat) and post a dumb post saying like: I read threads in this forum and its great! Those guys from (your forum name) is a total losers!

That will get you enaugh visitors to get 500 active members

The best solution is to flip the script and reverse the problem. Get your forum in front of people that already have a following.

Spend 1 hour brainstorming how you can attract popular mods and various authors from other forums. If they put a link to your forum in their sig you can easily and effectively poach some serious volume from existing forums.

This requires a bit of manual labor or outsourcing but it is foolproof. I have done it a number of times and it works every time.

    Say thanks :)

Which script are you using to run your forum? There's multiple ways to auto-post to boards and fake activity, but they vary depending on the software.

    For example using vBulletin...

There's setup features such as session timeout in VB that keeps members logged unless inactive for X amount of seconds. You can increase this for example to 2592000 (30 days). After that set up 200 accounts, or whatever number you'd like to show active, and log them in to certain forums on the board to show as active users in that forum. That will make it appear that there's that many members online and active.

After that use RSS feed manager to auto-post to those boards. Snag different feeds for each board and set up multiple users to make posts based on the different feeds. These feeds can be setup to search, update, and post at set intervals. They also have the ability to post based on certain keywords from the feeds. The great thing about the feeds is that they're typically current topics.

Then you'll have to either add responses to those posts yourself (since the rss feed only makes the initial post) or find people to post for you. Personally I'd head over to DP or somewhere you can find people to post for .05/post unless money is tight.

Doing something like that will make the forum look active enough. From there I'd set up some blogs, write some articles, and use web 2.0 sites to drive traffic. Grab BMD or use social poster to bookmark those sites. After that you should have some members signing up and beginning to post.

To finish it off I'd launch a contest. It could be 3 tiered such as most referrals, most quality posts, and the final being a poll for best member by popular vote. After that's complete I'd use PPC to drive traffic, and use long tailed keywords with low bid costs for this. Now what you've done is given people an active community filled with content. To put the icing on the cake they've found your site during a contest, so extra incentive to join.

Guys does anyone suggests to get a nulled vB? I see people sharing it on warez forums but I'd rather go for a licensed copy as it's only $160.

When setting up the RSS feed you select the forum and user you'd like to post from that feed. So you can have as many different users as you want posting to your forum via RSS.
