You can always check meta keywords in the source code. It is widely used while providing little to no value.
It would give you a strong intel on their KW.

Also, you can check whether they are using adwods and what KW they bid for.

Yes ahrefs have a very nice tool called "position explorer" which give numerous keywords your competitor rank for. plus it give the opportunity to check the results for different countries.

    I use:

    -searchmetrics
    -SEMRush
    -AHREFs

Basically AHREFs and SEMRush are probably the best tools with the largest index. If you're broke and want to see what a competitor is optimised for and the site is pretty small, just run a screaming frog crawl pull out their H1s and titles. Then split out the titles to the page, at least then you can see what they're trying to optimise for. :)

Just try out the 14 day trial on ahrefs for now. If you're just starting out, you should be able to gather plenty on your industry/niche without paying for a sub.

Semrush is good, but for free it's limited number of keywords that they show.

K-meta is one of the many tools, a small suggestion here.
