SEO is one of the best ways for small businesses to gain traffic for their websites. Of all the ways in which to promote their company and their website, SEO is perhaps the cheapest as it is virtually free. A small company that depends on its website for generating enquiries needs to do its SEO well. Of late, Google is awarding higher rankings to web pages of well-established and bigger companies, instead of relevant web pages, which may originate from the websites of smaller companies. Under these circumstances, it is important for smaller companies to have an aggressive and focused SEO policy.

    • Ensure the website?s design is professional and that navigation is easy for its visitors to allow for comfortable browsing of the website and gathering of the desired information.
    • Special focus is placed on making websites load faster, as slow loading websites not only lose traffic but are also considered negatively by Google.
    • Create a website rich in content. Content is the lifeblood of SEO and making the best use of content can help small businesses immensely. Having elaborate web pages on the services offered by the company, different pages for different services, having pages for each location that the business is operating and maintain an active blog are some ways in which a small business? website can build its content infrastructure. If required, the business owners can write content for the website.
    • Blog on the latest news and views on the markets that their business is active in. This not only helps in building traffic for the website but also helps in gaining valuable links for the website, establishing the blogger as an authority in that area.

The answer is very simple. You don't.

What you need to do if your budget is low is to start a blog/news area within your website so you can keep the website updated on a regular basis (1 to 4 articles a day ideally, 3 a week min). Use these articles to interlink your blog posts with the main URLs on your website. Over a period of a few months, you will notice how your website starts to rank organically for certain keywords.

Run a small advert campaign, either via social media, ppv or ppc; run it to a URL where you are selling nothing; this way you will be able to achieve a really low cpc. Use this traffic to your advantage and then start the offsite efforts. Overtime you will achieve good results for your target keywords.

If you want to hire a proper company to do this for you, be prepared with a GOOD budget. I would advice against the SEO route unless you can spare around $10k over a a 6 month period. Otherwise you will just end up buying BH packages and hurting your site more than any other thing.

    Best of luck with it!
