Use traffic travis to analyze the competition for the keyword. What the google keyword tool means by competition is the 'adwords competition'.

Try TT or go to Flippa and click deals in navigation bar and use SEMrush for a week for free. If you want to do it old school then toss quotes around the phrase, search in Google and install SEOQuake. It will quickly tell you many details about your page 1 competitors. If you see a bunch of competitors with 10+ year old domains, tons of backlinks then find a different phrase.

I use the SEO for Chrome extension. Works pretty well.

There are tons of methods for analyzing keywords, but the best one in my opinion is common sense. I once had a keyword with VERY high search volume and VERY little competition. Looked further into it and all it was was a medical informational keyword. The traffic was obviously not a buying keyword. Make sure you distinguish which keywords are informational and which ones are buying keywords. You want to target a mix of both, unless you're strictly e-commerce, whereby your product pages should aim to rank for just the buying keywords.

All depends on your type of site.

Read, read and read some more. Nobody is going to spoon-feed you basic keyword research on BHW. Use the search function and start reading. If you need spoon-feeding then find a paid forum like Wealthy Affiliates (not even sure they still exist) and put down some money for lessons.

There are so many tools are available to do something like that.
You have to choose what you want and you need to know how you want to make it work.
