How to evaluate "ghost" IG profiles for audience targeting?

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for insights from experienced SMM professionals on how to properly and step-by-step evaluate whether an Insta profile is worth engaging with - specifically, in the context of analyzing whether it belongs to the target audience and is worth interaction.

What’s already obvious and used:
  • Reading the bio
  • Checking the profile photo and overall visual layout
  • Looking through a few recent posts (if there are any)
But I have questions about trickier cases.

What to do if:
  • The last post is from 2023 (or even earlier)?
→ Should we treat such a profile as “dead”?
→ Or could it still be part of the real target audience, just not posting actively?

  • There are no Stories at all - or they’re extremely rare?
→ How should this be interpreted?
→ Is this simply a passive observer or an inactive ghost profile?

  • The followers/following ratio looks odd
→ For example, 300 followers and 458 following.
→ Is this worth paying attention to when evaluating engagement potential?

Context: I'm particularly interested in those quiet, “ghost-like” profiles that:
  • Rarely post anything
  • Almost never publish stories
  • Appear “empty” at first glance
  • But are actually active users, spending hours in IG daily, watching stories, liking, and maybe DM-ing quietly

So the main question is: How can one build a clear evaluation system to distinguish between:

  • Truly inactive (dead) accounts
  • And low-profile but alive observers - who do belong to the target audience and may engage if approached correctly?

Any frameworks, checklists, signals, or personal experience would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks in advance

If they watch stories or engage in dms even without posting they still good targets just check if they like or react to other accounts it shows they’re passive but alive ignoring the weird follower ratio unless it looks totally botted .

Thank you so much for your response - really valuable input!
I just wanted to clarify a bit what I meant:
When I land on a potential target profile, I obviously don’t have access to what they’re watching, who they’re DMing, or how they react to stories.
All I can see is the “external shell” their bio, profile picture, posts (or lack of), any available stories, follower/following count, likes and comments on content, etc.

So my question is: Is there any way to get a better sense of whether the user is truly active if I don’t have internal access to their reactions, story views, or engagement with others?

Are there any tools, signs, or methods - even indirect ones - that help identify if it's a passive-but-alive user rather than a dead or fake account?
Again, really appreciate your reply - it’s helping me shape a better evaluation framework!

One way is to see the "last post uploaded" date. Ones that are posted within a year are good ones to engage with since they have activity on the account.

first check do they have multiple post in same day.
for ex. profile make 5 post in one day then filter it out.
check the quality of picture.
repeated post.
also engagement too.

I have encountered many accounts like that. One way I use is to check hidden interactions like hidden story views. If they still view and respond, even if they post less, it is still worth keeping in the target. In addition, using an analysis tool like HypeAuditor also helps filter quality accounts from that "ghost" crowd
