After worked in offline SEO for a while and lost a lot of time with some customers that treat people like assholes when they had made a ton of money because of great SEO services, i'm starting to work in a different way and i want to share it with you.

First of all, if you can, never rank the customer domain but buy one in their niche and redirect it to their website. So, if they're leaving you to pickup services for another provider, they will look smart when you will just shutdown the redirection.

If you can do it, try to dont build or optimise a website for them but offer them a visibility package that include a website lease. So, if they want to cancel your services, they will look smart again.

I'm suggesting it because if you offer good services and the customers have great results, some of them will start to feel powerful and will treat you like an asshole for any little reason.

I'm telling it because it's the case now with a customer that had a shitty business with a shitty image and now they are in the first results with a lot of customers, a great image and they're making money and they are recognised in their market.

Last week, we've putted a new website online for them and followed the modifications they asked in the preview that we shown to them.

Today we received a 5 feet long email from them telling that there's a big mistake in the website and they are disapointed to see it with the money they gave us and we need to fix it. What their customers will think about it and bla bla bla. (We didnt put "Inc" along their company name)... :twitch:

They never mentionned it in the review that they gave us but now,,, it's a terrible problem in their website. Like if the earth stop turning.

2 or 3 other fucking stupid things like that....

All that to say,

When they start to grow and they become recognised, your competition will start to offer them services and they will say that they pay too much, you are not good and with them, they will have the whole earth for a quarter of that price. It's bad but it's the game.

3/4 of them are working in SEO for 1 or 2 years in their mom basement, they have no experience, no results, nothing to lose and no bill to pay. They have no idea about investments that are requiered to manage a business and they dont give a fuck about you, so, keep it in mind and keep in mind that some customers are nices but some are not, and some will change with the time, so, build ranking for you and let them using these results.

Try to never build ranking directly for the custommers, if you can do it.

Certainly, you can not do it with everyone but if you can already do it with few ones, it's not all lost.

Hope that suggestion will give you some good ideas!

I agree totaly with you but few k's are often welcome.

With the method that i explaned, it's again better.

You can offer your services, rank a website during you're renting it to a custommer and after 1 or 2 year, when the website is ranked, just say him goodbye :)

I am going to have to disagree a bit here. While clients can be a pain in the ass it is just something you need to deal with if you are going to be building websites and/or doing seo work for other people.

Yes you will have to deal with competitors that try to undercut you, every business has to deal with that. Cheating your customers though is not the answer. If someone pays you $500 a month to work on getting their site ranked then that is what you should be doing. Taking a clients money and then ranking your own domain just so you can pull their rankings if they decide to stop your service is about as unethical as you can get.

Sometimes clients leave that is just the way it goes in the real world, long term though you are much better off treating them correctly than screwing them over. I have had clients leave me for some bottom feeder and then come back when they find out there was a reason the other person was so cheap.

No client owes you anything other than to pay on time for services that you have furnished them and to honor any contract they have signed with you.

All you owe your client is to do the best job you can while taking their money. This does not include taking their money and ranking your own domain instead of theirs.

Seriously if you can not deal with the fact that all your clients are not going to pay you for the rest of their lives you should probably take the advice further up the thread and rank your own sites instead of working for other people. Working for clients is messy sometimes, there is no way to get around it. If you let it eat you up that is exactly what it will do.
