I have a potential client who I think I can close and I'm scared to death.

It's a real company with a real single word domain. They do some PPC (adwords) and they have a few articles but that's it.

They have an ancient domain (1994 or so and have it paid for three more years). So they show up in Google pretty well for short tail domains just because they have been around for a long time.

But let's say they own automotive.com and they are a mechanic.

The automotive industry is HUGE but they just need people with broken cars in just certain parts of the country (they have five locations around the country).

Anyway, a newish company is starting to kick their ass in the serps. They are almost always above them and have more long tail keywords.

I can't screw with the "money site" because that is their everything.

    Any ideas?

Make satellite domains pointing to the corporate domain. The satellite domains names should be keyword related.

Then fill those satellite sites with appropriate content, related to the keyword. And every time you use that keyword, link back to the corporate site.

All spam links go to the satellites, and point all the quality links to the corporate site.

I use this technique for the hotel niche.

I thought about this but if you are G or a competitor and you see all these sites that only have links back to one site... you pretty much know it's them doing it!

    Who cares about the competition.

BigG can always penalize you for whatever they wish.

    No shit, Sherlock...

If they're only interested in ranking for their keyword and a handful of specific city names, then create some good articles including the keyword and the city name. Then place those in subfolders/subpages like domainname.com/keyword-in-city and put up links to those on the main page. Assuming the site has some PR and some trustrank thanks to its age, it should help push up those pages in the SERPs for those specific keywords + city names.

Once that is done you can also go ahead with creating some satellite sites/web2.0 properties and blast the fuck out of them.

This is what I am planning to do as well... you could also put out some 'other' links with no follow tags.
