I have a plugin that shows the standard rich-text snippets in the search results, but the one I use only shows basic information like the star rating out of 5 and the author (I'm using the Author hReview plugin).

I want something that also shows how many "votes" the review has gotten, similar to the screenshot below:

    Google Star Rating Votes.png
Also, how would one go about artificially inflating the number of votes it has? One of my competitor's is doing this and I know for a fact he doesn't have 637 natural votes because he will start ranking for a keyword and then the next day he's got hundreds of votes somehow. The keywords aren't highly searched either so that's how I know he's artificially inflating it in some way.

If anyone knows another plugin or even some code to use to show the votes and artificially inflate them, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks.

Yeah I have seen that one too. Does it show the number of votes like in the screenshot I posted?

Thanks will look into that one more. Now for the second part of the question, how would I go about making the number of votes higher than it actually is? I believe the reason my competitor is always outranking me is because Google is seeing he has hundreds of votes, but I know he is inflating that number in the code somehow.

The GD Star Rating plugin does a really good job. I also found out about the EC Stars Rating. It says it has low impact on page load. Anyone tried or is using the plugin now?

I just tested out the EC Stars Rating but removed it. It's almost way too basic and I don't like how the only way to install it on your posts is via a short-code. I wish it had some settings built into the post where you can manually set a rating and do a little more with it.

Going to try GD Star rating now.

Actually I just got done playing around with GD Star Rating, and to be honest it's a bit clunky and way too complicated for what I need. Plus there were a few bugs that not only myself but a lot of people are experiencing, and I don't think the developer keeps up on it much anymore. I'm sure it has it's place, but there's much better solutions out there.

I just found and installed this one, and so far it seems perfect for what I need: http://wordpress.org/plugins/schema-creator/

With that one, I can set a review to have like 200 reviews if I want and it will show up that way in the search engine pages.

Author hReview is good too: http://wordpress.org/plugins/author-hreview/ but the only thing I didn't like is it doesn't allow you to set the number of votes or reviews a certain post has gotten like Schema Creator above does.

DO NOT GO WITH AUTHOR HREVIEW.

There are some issues with it and you'll be waiting forever on support. In fact support is down right poor. There are people in the support forum waiting on average over 5 days, one guy has been waiting 15 days and still he doesn't respond. Apparently he's sick but yet he still is able to answer other post's. When challenged about that, his reply was "I chose which post to reply".

    Chose another plugin

I've actually been using the free version for a while and haven't had any problems with it. I know there's a paid option too, but I don't use that one so I can't speak in regards to support on that end.

For something really simple to setup and that isn't as bulky and complicated as GD Star Rating is, Author Hreview does the trick for me.

How are you guys using the rating system? Are you using them only in any reviews you do or are you using them in every post you put out so as to increase CTR in the SERPS?

I know two guys who got penalized one week ago (same day) for using the rating system on posts. I will try to ask them next time I talk to them but apparently they got a notification in WMT's manual review saying they had been misusing their ability to rate their content. It looks as though Google has been on an active quest to screw BH all the way since the 21st August; "lots" of manual reviews going on. I'm also seeing lots of 301'd sites are getting goofed with this much-talked on-going algorythm since the 21st.

Like I say, how do you guys use the rating system?

    Cheers

Well my site is an actual review site, so in most cases the rating system fits. But I do add some posts from time to time that aren't necessarily reviews, and I will sometimes still add a rating to them depending on what the post is exactly.

When you say they got penalized, did they lose their rankings too, or was it just a warning to stop abusing the rating system?

Yes, for reviews it makes sense, although wasn't the rating system designed for users of one's site? As in people can vote other than you etc? How about the rest of guys here who use it in a blackhat-ish way, how do you use them? All content, some content?

The guys I mentioned got a broad penalty applied, but unfortunately with the violent SERP changes since the 21st, it's difficult to determine if the rating-system penalty carried over to SERPS. Both these guys are in similar niches although they are unrelated in terms of linking (they do know each other though). They were wiped out, from the SERPS; I checked their penalized sites and they were all on pages 250+ for their important keywords; big traffic cut (they had 15% of the traffic prior to the penalty, according to statcounter which they use), and they do have good blogs with good backlinks; no blackhat stuff except for having misused the rating system, which they learned from some guy who was showing them about it (I don't know what this third guy has had happening with his sites). Only sites who were affected were their rating-system-misusing sites; the rest of their sites either staid stable or gained traffic (like I say, these guys are more of whitehat guys and a bit gullible, to be honest).

All of this is from Wordpress meet ups by the way; I attend a few from time to time and I got chatting to them when they asked me about my traffic; then they showed me their sites and the penalty, only thing they had done is use the stars for all their content. The guys were pretty-much oblivious to what they had done as they thought every Wordpress user was doing it.
