I am working on an SEO project for a business site and I don't want to risk any negative impact on the site. I'm planning to build my own pbn for the site to minimise the risk.

Is there any risk with that strategy?

other option is to build and rank a separate site and then direct the traffic to the money site when it comes.

What do you guys do when you are trying to rank a highballs site and you don't want to take an risk?

There is risk with any type of link building including PBNs. If you don't take every precaution to ensure your PBN sites cannot be linked in any way, there will always be the possibility of being penalized. What you should be trying to do is minimize this risk.

How you go about doing this is making your PBNs real sites, not just a wordpress blog with 2 articles on it. Actually put time into each of these sites. Also, take the extra time to use different hosts, domain registrars, etc.

Outside of PBNs, you can go full "white hat" link building techniques. Check out Brian Dean from backlinko to get some ideas, I like a lot of his content.

any lnikbuilding is against google tos. so ???

The level of risk isn't dependent upon the type of links (PBN vs web2.0) only, but also in how you build the PBN and the anchor strategy you use. If you wouldn't consider yourself an expert at building a PBN without a footprint then I'd say you are starting on very shaky ground to begin with. There are WAY too many people that think its easy to just throw up a handful of PBN sites and rank safely. Yet almost every week on the forums I seem to read about somebody having an issue. So study up before you start. Have a game plan.

if you want to rank without taking risks then invest on guest posts on high authority sites. The truth is there is hardly any strategy without its pros and cons.

It's a bit of a catch-22. A private PBN would help mitigate the risks somewhat, but wouldn't be fail-proof. Personally, I would make use of buffers to filter juice from strong links that you wouldn't feel comfortable poiting direct at your site. I would also look at buying some posts on genuine high PR quality sites (guest posts/press releases) and a 'white-hat' branding-type service in the $200-400 range.

Thanks guys. I appreciate there is always a risk.

I am planning to build the PBN as I said - I will use separate registrars, separate hosts, high quality researched content - I am going to try and make PBNs that have value in their own right so they look 100% legit.

I am also planning to purchase guest posts on some other authority sites - again genuine sites.

I feel like this is as low a risk as I can get (Although it will be the first time I have built a PBN).

But I just cant decide whether I should build a separate site for the client and rank that, rather than pointing anything at the main site? I guess that would then be 100% safe, but maybe its overkill?

I think if website is bigger then Branding is much important and for that pick the best niche wise site and start targeting there to collect traffic, and reputation management.

With PBNs, what you are going for is tricking Google into thinking the webmaster that abandoned his site (your pbn domain) came back and wants to revive it.

If you want to be on the safe side, just make it look as good as the previous owner. Good theme, good content, dont just post links to your money site.

If you are building what sounds like a "brand" level website for a company the budget is probably there for you to actually get high quality links from guest posting and get actual authority links from other websites in your area.

Or they likely have the budget to build a real social presence and to do PPC advertising to build their brand and ultimately their website for their brand.

Thanks, that makes sense. I'll have to get a few domains from you at some point if you are still selling them?

Yes you are right - Social and adwords are two areas we are working on.

Just want to do a little bit towards organic SEO on top of that and thats why I thought truely private PBN would be safest route.

Well written content no spelling mistakes.

Content that is in relation to your keywords.

No stolen images. And keep it updated regularly.

If you have never built a PBN before, I would advise against doing it for your client if you do not want to risk their websites. PBNs are very tricky to set up properly and keep them "under the radar". Google is actively seeking out and nuking PBNs (as well as the sites they link to). If you are not familiar with the methods required to minimize the chances of your PBN from being discovered by Google, then I would not recommend building your first PBN for a site which you cannot afford to risk.

As such, I would recommend to simply trying to generate leads for your client by ranking other websites within his niche. That would be as risk free as it gets.
