how can I dilute anchor text ratios safely?

Would it be better to delete some current links or just slowly build new ones to dilute?

Ah, great question that doesn't get asked as much as you'd think it should.

Build new links. Look at the (successful) competition's past year's links and emulate their ratios. If anything just lean heavy on "brand" anchors and variations of the URL (site.com, www.site.com, https://www.site.com, site.com/). If your site is highly accosicated with a single phrase you may be able to lean on that a bit as well. Then mix in LSI keywords that aren't TOO close to any of your exact keywords. But do this SLOW. Go too fast and its almost as bad as not fixing ration. Google will notice if you go from 20% exact keyword density over the past year to suddenly 2%. Crank the dial a little lower every week or two. Then leave it low until you see improvement, its more an art than a science.
