How to decide who needs SEO...?

    Hello all,

    I currently work on 4 sites and outsource all of my work ? so it doesn't take up that much of my time. I also have another job (in sales), and if I get into the office a couple of hours early I can start to make some calls to sell my SEO services too.

    My question is who do I decide to call? I?m going to target a couple of countries due to time difference, but which sectors/businesses should I focus on? Let?s face it almost every website needs SEO...

    Should I start by finding keywords with low completion then phone relevant companies?

    Any thoughts/advice will be highly appreciated?

    Target people who are already paying for adwords. You can get them to sign up for SEO if you can convince them, how much they can save form organic rankings.

    I would dedicate more time to understanding how to attack qualified leads (hint there all over the internet) rather then cold calling random businesses. When it comes to selling SEO I think you are going to find cold calling difficult at best. Just contact people who are already looking for SEO (this is of course a skill set/knowledge base you have to learn). This approach will also actually teach you a lot about what the market wants even bettering your skills. What type of SEO services do you sell? What countries were you planning on targeting?

    Yep, since they can get much more results from SEO than from AdWords. And SEO can cost them even cheaper in some cases

    I tried this technique with freelancer.com but cold calling worked better for me in terms of conversion. Here's my mantra: Find a pain, and then provide a solution to fix it. You don't need to sell anything. Prospects will get sold automatically.

    Hi thanks for that - that's a plan.

    I think cold calling will work better because if I am pitching on eLance etc I am competing with loads of people with silly small fees. The clients i currently have pay me a lot as they don't have the time to look at the competition, plus i have a good relationship with them.

    Due to time difference I am going to hit the German and Scandinavian market, plus both of these locations have a lot of money.

    And even better if they have organic positions in the 10-30 regions as that means you can sell the huge saving in adwords expenditure while only having to do minimal work to push the site forward as it already has a good established organic base.

    Purchase phone books from different locations, find the guys spending big $$ (half page, full page ads) and check their internet placement. Easy in; "hey, I saw that you spend xx,xxx in the yellow pages but you have no Google placements."
