Hey all, wanted to share one of my best HARO based unlinked mentions hacks
Background: With HARO I've found that more than 25% of our mentions are either unlinked or incorrect links. Often the attribution will be to my experts' social media profiles, which doesn't really help us at all.
So, unlinked mentions have always been a big part of my process. However, unlinked mentions, while having a better success rate than most other link-building methods still have a relatively low rate.
Enter: The follow-up technique
The way this works is simple. The normal unlinked mention technique is to find the writer, find their email, write your unlinked mention request and see if they can help.
That's good and all, but there's a much better way: find an email from them and just respond to that. Often a writer will either ask a follow-up question or let you know when the article goes live, respond directly to that email and make your quick request.
This works because instead of a brand new email, which is likely to be ignored, you're following up on a conversation you had with them.
Results: When you have an opportunity like this (and it’s not every link) I’ve been able to have a 40% - 50% link reclamation rate.
