Alexa isn't really a good metric to go off alone. Although, it can certainly provide some insights.

Sites with more tech savvy user's / marketers who have the Alexa plugin installed such as BHW can cause massive skewing of the data.

Compete.com is a pretty good website, BUT only provides traffic data from the USA. :(

Basically, Compete harvests US ISP logs and aggregates the data. It's a little more complex, but that's the basic idea of it.

    *GENERAL NOTE*
It's rather easy to game Compete.com , Alexa.com and most of these other metrics you just have to know where to buy the right traffic to manipulate each service, it can often be done quite cheaply.

It's hard to do this because it can be gamed so easily, all you have to do is have the toolbar installed and click on your site many times a day and it ranks higher.

Very difficult to say, but in my experience some house numbers.

    1 Million: 500 to 1000
    500k: 3000
    100k: 20000

Those are daily uniques. Number can be totally different in other niches imho.
