So I have a questionr regarding this. On my website I have obviously my social media buttons (not the "like" buttons but the buttons that lead to my social media pages) and I am wondering how does Google know that my site is connected to my facebook, google+, twitter account thus giving me credit interms of ranking factor for it. How does it know that? Or do i have to tell them or add the "Like" and +1 buttons to my website and have users click on those.

Likes are mainly used to have your visitors share your content to their social media profiles, it is possible it can have SEO benefits by linking to them, but Google doesn't care which networks you join. I would add them if you have good content people will share, it will only give you social signals which are used as ranking metric if someone decides to share your link.
