hi
I am trying to figure out a way to confuse the hell out of someone looking up my backlinks. is that possible?
i was thinking maybe i could point thousands of worthless backlinks to my site, so someone checking would get frustrated and leave me alone. but with negative seo in effect, this is not a good idea. so is there anything else i could do?

No this would be a bad idea at worst, and useless at best. Even if these worthless backlinks didn't hurt your ranking most if not all backlink checking services (ahrefs, majestic, etc.) would allow your competitor to sort the links by authority and presumed value.

You can block the bots of all the known backlink checking services, but this will also prevent you from running reports on your own site. Not to mention, they can still find backlinks to your site using other methods. You have to accept the fact that as long you are competing in a profitable niche your competitors are always going to attempt to undercut your efforts. The way you do it is not by confusing the competition they will be confused enough (no competitor research is capable of uncovering the entirety of your link profile), you do it by being better than the competition.

If something you do is working, there will always be imitators. It's just the nature of the business. Stay one step ahead of the curve, never fall into the trap of getting too comfortable.

If you buy a new domain, block web crawlers from crawling it and set a 301 redirect to your main site and then build links to the 301 that would probably be pretty covert.

Can't imagine why you'd need to do that though.

You would destroy your sites backlink profile to confuse other people? I don't understand that at all.

Who cares if people can see your backlinks? Backlinks are not the only factor for ranking. Not to mention, most backlink crawlers don't pick up every single backlink.

a couple month ago someone posted a very smart way how to hide your links in this forum. looks like you go to use the search ...

Hiding you backlinks? The time spent hiding your backlinks would be better spent looking for new links. Unless the competitor is a former spouse, I see no real benefit to bother with hiding footprints. A good SEO team would still find them.

What shananigans did you get yourself into this time?

Shouldn't worry about them looking at your backlinks. Its a common tactic that every SEO does to gauge their competition. Just continue building quality links.

The truth of the matter is, there's not many tools out there that will tell them a significant amount of your backlinks anyways. To the best of my knowledge all tools seriously under-report links.
