How can you make sure a websites PageRank isn't fake but valid?

I've done some searches here and seen some ppl saying that you can kind of "lend" PageRank from another site and that it happens a lot with expired domains?

Would be great if someone could shed some light on this. I think I may have bought backlinks from a couple of sites with fake PageRank. :(

I did some more research on this and found some info through big G. You can go to google.com and type in "info:exampledomain.com" and if in the result you see another domain it means the PR is fake.

The domain you are looking up are stealing the PR from the domain that showed in the result. A good tool that also seems to be able to catch fake page rank is checkpagerank.net but I would recommend you also do the info lookup in Google.

    Or you take "tools" like:

    Code:
    http://www.database-search.com/sys/pre-check.php
    http://www.seomastering.com/fake-pagerank-checker.php

You should also see some high pr backlinks for a legit high pr site. G updates PR every few months, so the site could have been a legit prX two months ago but won't be on the next update.
