Alright, Im setting up a website and I've opted to use a expired domain instead of a brand new one.

I've shortlisted 5 relevant domains 7 - 16 years old, with my keyword present in each of them.

My question is,

How do i check the quality of the expired domain? and what is the key data do i need to observe, to be able to differentiate b/w a good and a bad domain?

Stuff i know. (This might be wrong)

Domain with frequent drops is considered bad by google.

Constant registrar change is bad.

Get ahrefs of majestic or any similar and check the incoming links.

use archive(dot)org to check the history of the domain as well.

Unfortunately sometimes if everything lines up perfectly, the domain can still be penalized.

Summary :

  • Check archive using: https://web.archive.org/ - anything Drugs/Pharmaceutical / Chinese / adult history is a red signal
  • Check anchor text with Ahrefs: Are the anchor keywords closely related to the domain niche in the past?
  • Check BL profile with Ahrefs: Make sure it looks clean with less spammy links.
  • Check drop ratio: How often does the domain get dropped in the last 3-5 years.
  • Check domain email spam: https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx - Some domains have been used for spam activity in the past.

I ran the domain through Ahrefs Free backlink checker, BL and Anchor text it returned "No data found"

The domain returned Ok with the blacklist check.

Should i go with it ? I mean the domain is appealing and contains my primary KW, is 11 years old.

The Archive is good, the only concern is BL.

I've already done that for all domains. There's nothing odd or fishy with the previous content they hosted. Everything seemed neat and clean.

ok then

these days am also looking for expired domain

there was 2 article about what should be considered about expired domains

trust flow + ahrefs Domain Rating now I'm using to filter domains

This is pretty much spot on. Follow this and you should be good.

^ Pretty much this.

I would also add Domaintools screenshots, those tend to catch a lot of crap that Archive.org misses. Then historic anchor texts in Majestic. You can find a lot of crap there.

And instead of registrar drop, focus on hosting changes in Hosterstats. With a bit of experience you can see crap domain from hosting history alone.

should he even check on wayback machine to be on a safer side or that’s not required if he’s checking from the other sites mentioned above

It is still required. Domaintools sometimes catches the stuff Archive doesn't and vice versa. Plus it's essential to compare the content with the hosting history.

historic anchor texts in Majestic

its just possible by majestic own website or there are other tools to do that? because majestic is so limited per free account

Not aware of anyone else having this feature. Also, if you want to do SEO properly, you need the tools and budget for them. Otherwise it's just blind shooting.

and what about hosterstats

how to check history? what numbers I should consider? is it about numbers or names on that lists ? or dates of changes

http://www.hosterstats.com/historicaldns.php?domain=blackhatworld.com

Well figure that out, you don't expect me to share my entire know how, do you? :)

It's about dates and numbers. Knowing which hosting is parking and which is some weird content that doesn't belong. Compare that with Archive and Domaintools screenshots.
