This is the sequence of events:

    1) I made a one page site, using crappy wordpress theme from the wordpress repository
    2) I built links to it
    3) after a while, it started ranking page 2
    4) I had a theme cusom made by upwork freelancers
    5) I uploaded the new theme, copy/pasted the homepage content from the old site to the new site
    6) I added 50 more pages to the site
    7) The next time google came around and crawled the site, it tanked. I am not sure if it's due to the theme or the additional pages.
    8) This was a few months ago and it's never recovered.
    9) I suspect it's due to the theme. Maybe the freelancers are retarded and the theme has errors, I don't know how to check though.

Now I bought a theme from themeforest which has a lot of good reviews. I don't have any of the content saved in Microsoft Word or anywhere else on my computer. What's the procedure that you recommend for changing the theme with no downtime? automated solutions won't work because this is a custom theme.

    Follow the steps below

    1. Go to WP dashboard (make sure you have admin priviledge)
    2. Choose Apperance > Themes from the left hand side menu
    3. Select Add New on top
    4. Upload your theme.
    5. Once its done Activate it. You can also choose Live Preview if you want.

    Hope that helps

That's not going to work because the current theme is custom made, the posts won't show up like that.

Anything automated won't work. I will have to copy/paste everything manually. How do I manually copy/paste old site to new site, without down time?

If you have backup of your site, then the pages/contents can be extracted.

First ensure you've the backup for your site.

Changing theme always takes few times to config. So it'll good if you put the site on maintenance mood first, then install new theme and make necessary changes. Once everything is good, disable maintenance mood. It's easy man :)

It may or may not be because of the theme change. What I always do is: I check the site with web master tools before changing the theme, and then again I check it after changing the theme. In this way I can ensure that Google bot is able to get everything.

You should use this tool to see if Google is able to see everything.

Another idea: if u think the new theme is the culprit, then u can move back to the old theme.

Need to see the format before I can comment.

You can also check the site history on wayback machine.
