    Hi

I hired a freelancer on one of the popular Freelancing websites and sent him almost $500 for a project. Within a few days he started ignoring me entirely (even though he told me he would refund the money if he does not complete it). I have his skype ID and when I contacted him through another skype account he replied instantly. What is the best method to get out as much info possible from him and track him down?

    Thanks

1st thing you can do is enter his skype name in the search on BHW to see if he's ever used it here.

2nd thing you can do is give W130SN any info you already have. Hes good at digging stuff up.

A Reputable Freelancer will never scam you for 500$ if you hired someone for a below market value deal and he/she is new then he is not likely to refund even if you find him personally get over it and learn the lesson

I get a kick out of watching his detective skills. He should start "Scam Busters" business.

W130SN is probably at that dudes house by now.

But yeah, just do a chargeback or contact elance/odesk/freelancer support, and watch the guy you hired suddenly re-emerge and come up with the best excuses as to why you should have trusted him and then you must send the money back asap.

Thanks so much for suggestion. Several people mentioned chargeback. The thing is I paid with my Paypal balance and I don't think I can do a chargeback.

I filled a dispute in Paypal but they said they do not cover software or intangible goods.

    Thanks

You say you hired him on a freelancing site then how did you send money to his paypal and not through the site? I guess you tried to avoid their small fee and lost everything.

I don't know what are you going to do with his info but you can try watching what kind of projects is he bidding on and post a similar job from a new account and wait until he bites your listing. Repeat the same process by adding him on Skype and talk random stuffs for awhile and ask if he can help share/retweet/follow your fake page/profile on fb/twitter/instagram and say you can pay for his time,etc..,

Meanwhile talk about his interests and ask if he have any blog/website and if he is active on any forum like bodybuilding forum because you like it too or something. Offer him a lumpsum amount for say, if he can do something complicated but you'd need to talk with him on phone before sending the money. Say you can send advance payment it via WU before he starts with the complicated job.

By this time you'll have tons of info about him but you need to be patient through the whole play.

    Update:

I got his full bank details like his account number, bank, address, swift code (all details needed for bank transfer). I also got two phone numbers from him, his gmail address and company email.

What other details should I get before I divulge who I am?

I think I'll ask him for his mailing address to mail a money order..
    Thanks

so does he agree to refund you now? or what has been changed? if he refused to refund you via paypal, chances are that he will do the same with a money order or why would he give you his address at all, if he's not planning to refund you and ignoring you completely? i don't catch the logic behind what you're trying to do

If you hired him from freelancing site (like: elance, odesk etc) then definitely there will be an option to give ratings/ feedback etc. Give your feedback and rating which will directly affect to his profile reputation and his future income through that freelancing website. Next time he will think twice before doing such kind of things with any client.

Sometimes only because of this people lost their money. If you are hiring someone through any freelancing site then let them take few amount..... In such cases only freelance site support can help you out.

Ahh.. I added him on a new skype account and told him I want to hire him for a big project. We discussed details of project and I told him I'll send him money via wire transfer so I need wire details. This is how I got all the information..

I left feedback for him however either he closed his old account or they banned his account but his old account does not exist.

While I was doing my "detective" work he told me he has a new account on the site. And I visited his profile and see it was created within 1-2 weeks after I left him bad feeback. So he is building up his profile again on the site - using another account..

I cannot issue charge back because I paid using Paypal balance.

Paypal will not cover digital goods. I spent 3 hours speaking to a Paypal representative.

    Thanks
