Hello, few days ago I read method that say google is now counting alexa rank as ranking factor. Dont know if its true, but I guess it cant hurt to boost alexa ranking. Seen some fiverr gigs, but dont want to spend money on that, so can I boost my alexa ranking by myself?

Simply put, Alexa bases its' ranking off of backlinks, and traffic. The more traffic and backlinks, the better your Alexa ranking. This isn't to say Google/Bing-Yahoo actually care about your Alexa ranking, but also takes into account a websites traffic/backlinks when ranking a website. Focus on bringing in more traffic and high-quality backlinks. Alexa rank will soon there follow, and with that, will come better Google ranking.

Fiverr Gigs (and the like) are typically bot-sent traffic with all similar hostnames and will provide very minimal gain. If it were as easy as spending $5, everyone would have a high Alexa rank lol. You need organic traffic.

    A couple misconceptions here.

Firstly, Google does not use Alexa at all in their ranking algorithms. If they wanted to judge website popularity they would just use the info they get from Chrome since more people use Chrome than use the Alexa toolbar.

There are good reasons to increase your Alexa ranking (more trust, advertisers will think your site is more popular, and some people will pay more for your site), but Google rankings are not related to Alexa rankings at all.

Alexa ranking is determined solely based on how many people with the Alexa toolbar visit your site. Backlinks are not factored into this at all. So if you want to increase your Alexa ranking, simply download the Alexa toolbar and start visiting your site more. You can also do fiverr gigs, and those gigs will likely just be people with 10 different virtual machines with the Alexa toolbar installed visiting your site from each virtual machine.

This isn't true at all lol.

Alexa bases their rank off of Location Based Traffic, Backlinks, and Social Referrals. This is why if you have an Alexa Pro account, it goes through the your websites 'Certified Metrics', which breaks all of this down for you. I have a website that's heavy in traffic, popular on social networks, and a ton of backlinks over the last 10 years. There's a reason why I'm highly ranked within the US (211,000-ish.)

Google would never use Alexa's information as a ranking factor because the way Alexa gather's the data is so outdated that I'm surprised Alexa still pays their staff to keep it updated.

The only value alexa gives is it tells you which sites attract the most Alexa toolbar users. For example, The Warrior Forum gets more Alexa toolbar users than Squidoo. Does that mean that The Warrior Forum gets more traffic than squidoo? Hell no.

I don't know what SEO source told you that Google was using Alexa's information, but I would re-think their credibility if I were you.

I wouldn't consider 211,000 to be that good of an Alexa ranking.

    From Alexa's site:
Their data comes from "traffic" sources (which is why every other word is "traffic"). Social media and backlinks are not traffic sources. I will grant that "Certified Metrics" doesn't use Alexa toolbar data, but it is based on traffic numbers and not social numbers. That is why your "Traffic Rank" directly correlates with your "Reach %", as they are both calculated using the exact same traffic data.

Granted, I haven't kept up with Alexa completely in the past couple of months, so if you have any data from them proving otherwise, I would definitely like to see it.

Shoould have been probably more clear for what exactly I need that boost in alexa ranking, but since all the experts here says its useles, then I will probably not spned my time doing that. the method (from download section here) says

    Step1 - Social signals via bookmarkingStep 2 - Fanpage + twitter promo + fb links/g+/tweets
Step 3 - done about the same time as step 2* - Boost Alexa Traffic Ranking
Step 4 - True referral traffic (like from press-releases or classified ads and so on)
Step 5 - A webbed linkwheel (from videos/images/memes) and so on
Step 6 - web2.0 trash - Create 1 GOOD web.20 property - squidoo is best for this. Then
link it to your site. Then drive tons of links to it (like .edu links, profile links, forum links
    and so on)
    Step 7 - 2 Tier Socialized Links

So that is step 3 and it is something what should tell google that you are actually getting traffic from the social sites you have your links, but since everyone here says google does not give a f... about alexa, then I dont know, maybe that whole method sucks. I stopped doing SEO after penguin, but now have some time and money to try it again, but looks like I need some better method, so if you know about somethin better, let me know. Thanks for you help, at least I will not spend my time doing something what does not work.

Alexa rank is like G page rank, mostly useless but if you have a reason for example to impress potential advertisers then it's better to have than not.

Some interesting stuff on this thread. Here's my small bit of knowledge from what I know from my own testing.

Alexa is a surprisingly crude aggregation system for plotting actual website popularity. They can dress up their metrics to make their system look scientific but simply put they measure hits from sites with their toolbar installed or if you have their code/widget installed on your site they can track traffic.

You could get 50,000 real hits from sites that don't have a toolbar installed and not move your rank. You could install the toolbar on your own pc and leave your own site running in a background tab and put a brand new site under 1 million in less than two weeks. Install firefox and explorer on your pc-and have the toolbar installed on both, leave your site now running on two browsers. If you have a spare laptop rinse and repeat and watch your alexa rank tumble.

If you were organised with 5-10 friends worldwide running a multiple tab site sharing gig, watch your alexa rank really tumble and get some alexa authority for worldwide hits.

Needless to say any metric as easy to game as that carries zero weight with G.

Hmm I have virtual machine and also four laptops running 24/7 for other IM purposes, so looks like with toolbar I could move my pages few spots up, but since it looks its useless... :)

211,000 Global, and 35,000 US ranking is quite high for a website that isn't using any black-hat methods in obtaining a higher Alexa rank. I guess I was basing my ranking data off of my certified site, which takes into account all traffic sources. It also looks at referrals to see where your website is being linked from, which is then taken into account when ranking your website (which in all fairness is technically reviewing backlinks as a ranking factor.) My bad for not fully explaining my reasoning.

Did you even bother reading the '...and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources, and is a combined measure of page views and users'? lol.

improving alexa rankings with bots or other non-human methods is a completely NO-GO.
Google takes into account all the data (time on each page, bounce rate etc etc etc) and after using hitleap (sends traffic that counts in alexa, but complete crap traffic) my alexa rankings improved in less than a week(into top 1m) but the google rankings started to drop.

In my opinion alexa ranking doesn't really mean anything.
