Ok Ok I know this is BHW lol, but I'm getting fed up with all the russian spam comments on my personal blog. I tried blocking their IP range, but now they're using another one. I think they're leaving russian comments cuz it all shows up as ?? ??? ??? ????? ???!!! All their website urls end in .ru.

Anyway to block them from accessing my site even through a proxy? Thanks. :p

    Blocking ip blocks won't help.
u need to use something like
    recaptcha on your comments post.

    ??? ?????? ? ???? ? ??????, ??? ?????? ? - ???? ? ????????? ?????? ? ???? ? ??????, ??? ?????? ? - ???? ? ?????? :)

Sorry, could not hold it :)

On a serious note, you could block wider IP ranges, but the problem is that many Russian IP ranges are shared with European IPs and some with China etc.

I assume you are using a self-hosted Wordpress blog? Why dont you try to get some plugin that will enable CAPTCHA in the comments form (cannot recommend any). That should work better than blocking IP ranges.

What about blocking them from accessing the site entirely? It's wasting up bandwidth (not a lot, but still...).

There was one dating site I was banned from, and I tried registering through a proxy, but the site wouldn't even load. But when I used my own IP, I could see the site. I don't know how that works. Anyone know?

I get comments from regular people so I don't want to turn the comments off.

my site used to get many visits from spammers in russia/ukraine/australia, until i started blocking ip ranges instead of blocking ip numbers. i still get them occasionally and when i do i'm quick to add their ip line to my htaccess ban list. :D

if you just block ip numbers ("deny from 88.127.72.122") then they will come back, but if you block entire ranges ("deny from 88.") then you can stop them from coming back under a new line. you will have to block many ranges and they will still get thru from time to time but this will stop many of them. be very careful not to block regions that you want to get posts from.

if you have the cash, get a dedicated server and block entire continents. shared hosting won't allow you to block countries but a dedicated server will.
