the number 1 guy has 20,000 words
I can't write that many words due to money issues
Can I beat him if I only have 1700 words?

Edit: he is in another state and it would be difficult for him to sue me. Can I just copy paste his content into my site and outrank him?

So you want to copy his content unto your site and still hope to outrank him:D:D:D

Good luck with that, maybe we'll all start copying verbatim and outranking competitors with such contents.

You will not show up in top 100 if you copy paste the exact content as his. What position are you ranking right now? Why not aim for top 3 spot first, see if it is worth it , then keep expanding the content to eventually beat him one day?

Why not just take the general points of each paragraph he wrote and write in your own words or outsource it if needed. It will be your own content, you just get inspired with his content idea and write it yourself.

Sorry but I'm completely confused by how you don't have money for the words. Maybe just write some yourself and add onto it?

The number 1 guy is an outlier. You should ignore too thin or too long content and get the average of others. I guess the average would be 2k-3k and that should be enough to rank if you focus on other aspects like page load, UI, UX, backlinks etc.

It's possible to outrank but not with the copied content. You can also try with 1700 words and point quality links, also check other factors.

It's not the number of words on a page that helps it rank, but how well the article answers the searchers query.

It maybe a small section of the article that's doing the heavy lifting. Your job is to figure out this ranking factor and then out perform.

It's also the keywords you are focussed on and the links to the page as well as other factors such as your on page.
