How to avoid footprints?

    From your experience, what are the most common things that people are doing wrong when trying to rank that leave footprints for google? How do you do it differently?

    I see a lot of people using the SAME username on each website -- be it a web 2.0 propertie, a forum profile, a social bookmark or whatever. I consider that to be a huge footprint.

    Footprint can be something as obvious as using the same thing everywhere (e.g. a username, an affiliate ID, etc) or something as subtle as statistically having an unusual footprint (e.g. links only from blog comments). Where Google's algorithm draws the line depends on a complex function of all factors but even worse, if you trick the algorithm you still have to trick the humans (competitors and Google employees) in case they start poking their nose around. This is a pretty broad topic...
