Okay, my money site is in a quite competitive market (on google). I've an EMD (.org) and another has the .net. This term is kinda a company name but both the .org and the .net have been ranking well for around a year.

Usually, for the past year or so (obviously some changes) the company was 1st, my .org 2nd and the .net 3rd.

Now the .net isn't even on page one and my .org is 3rd.

    Doesn't sound too bad, right?

But the site that is now second doesn't even mention the keyword at all and is only 1 month old with 1 backlink!

For example, if the niche was "touchscreen phones" the site is only "phones.com/net/org". How is this even possible when the site doesn't mention 1 of the 3 keywords in the search term? I don't think it's google dance either since it's been slowly climbing for the past month or so.

Anyone else thing it's the company trying to remove our EMDs?

    Okaaay.

The one backlink has no PR but it's 10+ years old and automatically rings you to the new month old site. It's also listed on dmoz and so on...still don't understand this though

Maybe he's 301ing from another domain to the new one. I've done it with great success.

    Yup what he said^^

I have personally seen people getting #1 rankings with 0 backlinks. Funny thing is, the one competitor I am seeing doing this is using a 301 from a previously penalized website. I really wish Google would not allow link value to pass with a 301. But hey, just another way to game Google if you do it correct.

    Possibly.

You might also look into the possibility that you are getting penalized for something that you are doing wrong in SEO which explains why one dropped in rankings and the other one dropped a position.
