How the hell does this kid know the original file extension?

    Sorry, probably the wrong section but had no idea where to put this. Please move if appropriate.

    I was messing around with fake files and simply changed a .zip to a .pdf so it'd be a non-working PDF. This kid sends me a message saying it's a zip file with a PDF extension. How on earth can he know? Is it his OS? Curiosity is killing me :D

    why didn't you just google for a file corruptor like corrupt-a-file (dot) net ?

    anyway, if you just open the pdf file with notepad, text edit or any other text editing software you can see the original file format in the first line
    for a pdf it would be something like "%PDF-1.7" while zipped files, even when renamed as .pdf, often have something like "PK" and the filename of the zipped file at the beginning or even the software used to zip them.

    so you won't even need any special skills or forensics tools to notice that...

    n.p. let me know if it works for pdfs. I only used it for a word document once, ages ago ;)

    Maybe he use linux. He can see there, i guess.

    Or maybe like a lot of people he is just cautious and checks files before running them, since you have to mess around with fake files then obviously you're sending out questionable content anyway so it's only natural he would be safe.
