How selective is Instagram?

Instagram shows posts from people you've messaged or liked in the last week, so I only see likes from about ten close friends even though I follow hundreds

Hi everyone
I follow over 500 people and have never seen 470 of them like a post, which is impossible. It's always just a small group of familiar friends. Some friends I interact with quite a bit via messages, but most I've never spoken to. So I wonder how selective Instagram is.
Have you noticed that no matter how many people you follow, you only see about 10-15 familiar people liking your posts?
instagram looks more like a filltered feed rather than a proper list of people that u are following.the posts of those who post while u are active or whose posts you usually interact with are shown to u more often. but i do not think that the other accounts are blocked on purpose.

Open Settings, go to Account, tap Posts and Stories, and turn off Hide Like Count to see every like; tip: comment on three friends' posts each week so they're more likely to return the favor

I think Ig selects posts to feature based on their content, the time they’re posted, and the hashtags used; the number of likes will never exceed the number of followers.
