How possible is it, really?

All we hear about is how Googles algorithm changes to combat "black hat techniques" has turned the SEO world upside down, and the search engine's attempt at giving its users "better results" seems to be doing more harm than good.

My question is: How possible is it, REALISTICALLY, that the world will actually turn away from Google, and towards other search engines, like Bing, for example. Think about how the word "Google" is engrained into everyone's mind. It's THE #1 source of information in the world. If you think it's a possibility, how long would it take, in your opinion?

it is a decade process, unless they have a massive downtime.

Google is here and will be here for a little a while, bare with it and act accordingly.

I don't think you're going to see people turning away from Google until something new and innovative comes out that is better than what Google does. Only problem is Google might just buy them up first.

Simple, just replace that default search engine in 4 major browsers and half the population will switch to a new search engine. The worst part, they wouldn't even notice that they have switched, because "tech savvy" is not what best describes them.

@Lancis : Because they aren't tech savvy they have habits that are hard to switch. If the colors change they would do anything to get them back :p

Google isn't THAT old of a company, and we all saw the way Myspace died and Facebook dominated in a fairly short period of time. I think this may be possible on a larger scale with Google.

Although, Im not so sure if Bing will be the one to do it. We would have to see something really innovative to get peoples attention.

The issue is you are projecting your frustration onto the rest of the population.

In the SEO/Webmasters community everybody makes a big deal about Google's changes and thinks Google has lower quality results. However if you talk to regular users (who make up 99.99% of Google's users) they will all say Google's results are just as good as they were 6 months ago.

Im not projecting any personal frustration. Just what I observe around the IM community.

It's possible but that would take a long time. For most of the internet users google's result is the benchmark and Google has always maintained the quality of it compared to Yahoo/Bing.

google still gives better results than bing. and a lot more gmail users. gmail was the best thing they ever did besides maintaining quality search for their business.

Google will be here until they annoy people by providing shit results.

You could create a better search engine, but fact is people are happy with Google and they are going to be peoples favourite until they do something them self that ruins that.

Google has got his platform for a long period of time. Now all the things depends on google how they manage to keep this reputation. There are competitions all everywhere so google must get some quality compi

I don't for see any major search engine being born and getting strong enough to overtake google in near future. Google is to stay here so we have to "google" for now.

i'm waiting for facebook to die off. If that happens, then I'll believe Google can be de-throwned. Just look at Microsoft, once at the top of it's game has been outshined by innovation of a much smaller company Apple. There's a point where these large companies that dominate their industry start to loose their competitiveness

Google is everywhere. There are even posters "I don't know but Google knows" etc. Even people who use their computer solely for Facebook first go to google and type "www.facebook.com" or "go to facebook.com"

I think that one could beat google with good advertising (maybe advertising through TV companies) and with good engine, with fresh results and that will pick up pages almost instantly after publishing.

Now you need to wait weeks for bing to index your site, which isn't even close to be able to compete Google.
