How often do you put in 6 months building a blog + backlinks & SEO and not make a penny?

I'd like to hear from some of the BHW old timers concerning income potential for blogs. No, I don't want to know how much you're making a month. I'm talking about individual blogs. Lets say you build 100+ pages of 75-90% unique content up over the course of 6 months and you also constantly build backlinks using Scrapebox. SEO is also decent. No major errors. Do you consistently earn from these blogs or is it more hit and miss. I don't mind working on something that is ultimately productive, but I'd hate to waste 6 months of my life on something that is a failure.

lol.. thats what i was thinking.. if you are not making some kind of money after a month or two you need to seriously rethink your strategy.. if you build a blog around a shitty niche then no matter how much work you put in you wont make a penny... either that or you are not monetizing your site properly

How do you drive traffic to a website in such a short period of time? Backlinks take weeks to show up so you're not getting placed well in the SERPs. Very little traffic comes directly from backlinking. I'm just trying to learn and I'm obviously missing or not understanding something important. I appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks.

    1. You need to research your niches so you pick something easy enough to rank. Sometimes finding the niche can be the hardest part.
    2. You need to read a lot here and see what people are doing for traffic. But the main sources of traffic are search engines and social media.

Best advice is to build blog after blog after blog till you get it right. Eventaully you will get one right. Then reproduce what you did.

I built a beautiful Formula 1 blog only to realize that nobody else gave a crap about it and the monetization options were as slim as a super model, but not as sexy. As said above, research, research, research.

Being lazy, I'll actually throw some PPC traffic at a new site just to see what happens. Usually can get an idea of whether you are headed in the right direction.

Research, create a plan, stick to the plan, get organized, and again... stick to the plan.

If you do the following and put in actual man time hours into your website, within a month you should see impressions that turn into clicks. If that is not working, it appears you aren't doing something correctly. I've seen HORRIBLE looking sites that still get 1% CTR. If you can't get at least 10 clicks out of 1,000 visitors, then something is NOT right. If you are not getting visitors then, again, your are not doing something correctly.

I would like to answer that if you don't mind. Backlinking can take time, and yes it can definitely take weeks. What you need to utilize is (to steal a word from Google) "Instant" traffic. A big boom/craze over the last, let's say, 2-5 years has been social networking/bookmarking.

Post to Digg, tell your friends, create a twitter account, open up a facebook page, create a YouTube channel, send the links on a myspace account, go on StubleUpon, post something on Reddit, etc.. etc.. etc..

BHW has a wealth of information on how to post on social networking/bookmarking sites that, if done correctly, you will see (not actually instant but...) very quick results.

I created a few music sites (and done everything above) and within a month I was seeing 1k/day traffic, and it continues to snow ball. The site has only been up 2 1/2 months now. It's possible, it's do-able.. it works.

    I can't stress enough....

    • Research - If you go in blind, you won't see any results.
    • Game Plan - If you don't know what to do at the beginning, you won't know what to do at any point.
    • Get Organized - If you are not organized, even the smallest mistakes, will slip through your fingers.

    • Thanks Thanks x 4

I agree, don't waste your time and effort on a niche - that may seem good, but isn't going to any real results!

I have hundreds of websites and no matter what everyone tells you, in the long run it is always hit and miss. At any given time, I have sites that get decent traffic and others don't, but a few months down the road the picture might change completely and my best sites get only a few licks per day. The trick is have enough sites online and to find a way to build them quickly and efficiently.

Another tip: I have had this happening to me quite a few times: sites don't get Google love at all for whatever reason - I could spend months adding content, etc. and still see only a hit or two from Google. In that case, I totally change the content of the site and try again and this works 90% of the time.

This is a great tip. It took me a while to realise it, but it does work. Sometimes the G just ignores a site for a certain keyword. Odd, but there you go.

Also it is quite often the case that a site you think will do well dives and one that you are almost ashamed to admit is yours does great.

you aren't alone, I started so many sites it makes me nauseous, granted I have gotten a couple of payments from ad sense ... it is nothing like I expected it would be after all that work. Trying to rethink my strategy and start rebuilding a little at a time to maybe find something that works this time.
