I contacted the owner of a medium-sized forum I've been active on for 5 years about buying it, and he's asked me to make an offer. I know the convention is 10 month's revenue, but forums are much harder to monetize than other sites, and the database of posts/users is worth much more.

    Here's the details:
    Threads: 17k

    It's a pretty active forum - right now there's 73 members online. I have no idea what to offer him - $500? $1000? $2000?

Whats the PageRank? Whats he currently earning? Whats the niche around, is it something that you could monetize easily? How many indexed pages? How much traffic is it receiving?

My answer without the necessary information based on what you provided, somewhere between $1k - $2k would be reasonable.

Also, is important where are the most users coming from. It would be better if you would have over 50% of them, coming from us, uk, au., canada etc..

PR 4, earnings are currently $0 (Used to have adsense ads, but extremely poor CPC and CTR on forums. Niche is Hip Hop. I think I could monetize it quite well. 62k indexed pages. Awaiting traffic details.

Yes, they are western. I've been a member for 5 years, used to be a mod. The forum is very active (76 members online now, 987 guests). Most members are organic and I'd estimate 95% users are from USA, UK and Canada.

In that case, pay the lowest you can for it. $1,000 is a decent deal if you think you can monetize it.

That's what I thought. Even though the forum has the potential to make a lot (and therefore worth a lot, especially with many active users with 1000-5000 posts), the forum is not being monetized at all, and never really has been.. therefore, I should get away with paying little.

Are you sure the members are real members?

I have a forum with 5000 members, but most of them are spammers and people that have used xrumer I think?

Just a thought? And may give you an angle to haggle the price down?

Yes, as I said I was a mod for a while 4-5 years ago. I know the most active members and mods quite well. There's hundreds of other active members that joined in the last year or 2.

Offer $500-$1,000, low earnings, and he knows it hard to earn since he tried.
    Good Luck!

If you buy a forum you have to categorize 2 things:

How many people are writing content and which quality is this content?
They don´t bring you money because they don´t click on the advertisements usually. Also they are a way smaller number.

How many people are visiting the forum?

So 2000$ for a active forum, seems like a total nobrainer!

How many visitors does the forum have?
Does it has a good domainname?

Are people in this forum piss each other off and the traffic is more dependent on a handful nerd-posters or does it has a variety of posters?

10-times monthly income is extremly low!
Does the site has more Whitehat Backlinks?
    For example archived wikipediabacklinks, DMOZ,...
Or are the backlinks more spammy and you have to fear to get penalties from google?

If you are active anyways in the forum, it brings you lots more value because you know the forumdynamics. You know your "customers" pretty well...

Well it all depends upon the revenue generated each month from the forum usually the deal will be like 10 times the revenue generated in that month. Hope this is clear.

Remember the old trick. If you consider that $1000 should worth it, just offer him $400. He will say no way..so you offer him $550.. slowly increase until $1000, and then you'll have a chance that he will think he made a great deal, by raising the amount from 400 to 1000. Anyway, I hope you got the point, the sums may differ however
