I have been asked to help a couple of businesses with seo and I kind of am lost as what I should charge? One guy wants a one time set up (optimize site and create/submit a few articles) the other guy wants to know what I would charge for a monthly service (building links, article creation submission, digg, etc.)

Any one have any advice/suggestions? If it matters the industry is finance related (monthly) and a local real estate (beach area) company.

    Thanks

do what i do, I contacted seo companies on the net and asked them how much they would charge me to optimize a site with some pretty hard keywords, and i based my SEO packages off there's, but if u want my strong opinion, it depends on what your offering, if your telling them "I can rank you page 1-10 in google" and you can really provide them that, then of course $15,000 with a 6 month contract, but if your telling them "I can get you better positioning on search engines within your market based on keywords there asking you to optimize for then and you can provide them that service, then at the end of the day its pretty much based on your time.

Honestly it's what you can provide at the end of the day, page 1 on google is a house in beverly hills, and should be priced as such, but just for the seo service in general with no promises should be based on your time.

Basically, for the one-timer, I'd say $1000 flat. That's just me, I don't know your personal situation, but real estate. Come On ($$). If you think that's too pushy, then I'd go a little lower and try to get some banner space, or some kind of residual...I'm partial to the slow, long term cash flows. :D

And as far as the latter, well, figure out how much time you will invest in this and use that as a guideline.
I mean, if you set aside one hour every Friday, at say....2PM, just to focus on building links, etc...Spend a couple $$ on fresh articles, outsource Digg, get backlinks.. Shit, half of that 'special hour' you could spend watching some vids. (Don't let the wifey catch you!)

As far as the finance/whatever company is concerned, you are marketing the shit out of their website, and hopefully bringing them tons of traffic!

I would seriously think about proposing a regular salary. How much do you want to make?

Also, I don't know all the details in your current situation, obviously, and these would be hypothetical examples.

Ukescuba is right. It is all about what you are willing to work for. If you under price yourself, 6 months from now you will be pissed off at the burden that this work is.

Was working for a business doing easy local seo and they decided they wanted to go national. I told 'em up front they'd be in a monster fight but it was their decision. I didn't want to work that hard and excused myself from the project. The guy they hired charged 'em $2500 for the first month and then $2000 for the next 3 months.

They got taken (imo) but they paid up. Interesting side note: they showed me their contract with this guy and it's the one from the Local Biz Money Machine program.

He made them an Animoto vid to send out to the world and then targeted some low hanging fruit...so low it was damn near on the ground - 210 searches; why bother???

I guess let your conscience be your guide or go for whatever the market will bear.

There will vast difference in pricing of SEO services, many people outsource their works very cheaply through forums. But they charge their clients 3 or 4 times.. sometimes even 10 times what they get..

Coming to charges when you are going to guaranteed rankings then it depends on the keyword competition as said by earlier member.

If you are selling individual services like directory submissions, social bookmarking, blog commenting it depends on the quantity you provide and do some research through forums to check how much they are selling.

Just went for a physical last week and turns out one of my Dr's nurses is a certified hypnotherapist on the side. He found out what I do, and asked me how much to rank his site for a few key terms he's been trying to rank for...

I charged $700 up front and $200 a month for as long as the 5 key terms we chose stay on the first page. We're talking niche specific, local search terms.

I'm looking @ maybe an hour or so of work per month. This guy stands to make WAAAY less than a finance co. or RE Broker in the long run, and he offered me the gig based on 20 minutes of chit chat. I'd charge at least triple that if it's going to take any real work.

    maybe more.

    Hope this helps-

    Hugo

Personally I would say a lot of the price depends on how good you are. If you got to slave away night and day to make this work then make sure it's worth your time.

Don't underprice yourself if you want to be taken seriously
