I was reading a SEO related article and came across the engagement section, where the author was insisting the engaging content on social media helps in ranking on google.

I am relatively new to SEO than that author, won't take his name, he often does weekly videos on youtube though.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on this matter.

Yes it helps, but it's not the only thing you need to consider in ranking. You need to consider optimizing your on-page, build quality backlinks, speed up your website, site architecture, etc.

G ranking algorithm doesn't use just one variable.
It is a mix of different variables that should provide most relevant, quality result to a search.

Some variables like age, domain name will have smaller impact than i.e. amount and quality of backlinks.

Social metrics are just a part of the whole mix...

Content is one of the most important parts of the mix (better quality content (visitors engagement on your website also has an impact) = more chance to stick at high positions with good backlinks).

I've tested this over and over again and let me be clear, social signals doesn't affect your rankings.

Well, thanks a lot guys for giving your input here. I know about the mix and just wanted to know how much social media engagement has a part in getting your content ranked. A few people said, it is considered by G for ranking purpose and other says, it does not and sound very confident.

The author used the YouTube video example and said, the highest liked comment on a YouTube video also, becomes the search keyword for that video. Hence, the engagement on YouTube effects the content.

Exactly. I don't focus on one single thing only, but I put considerable amount of time and focus on all these platforms that works toward improving my google ranking. It's just that content has high priority.
