How much do you lose (if any) by not using Sitemap? For example if I have a website which has some rankings in google, would it go up if I installed sitemap? Any other benefits?

I haven't done hard comparison testing but I always use sitemaps and have even started to create separate image sitemaps. Google indexes them so I tend to think they work.

The sitemap will help more of your pages get indexed with Google. Just toss a link to it from your homepage. As for ranking, it definitely won't hurt.

While we're on the same subject. I started a new site and submitted my sitemap (WP plugin .XML) and on Webmaster tools, it says there is an error. My new site only has 6 pages indexed, and there's about 20 posts...I've deactivated and reactivated the plugin. Deleted it and reinstalled. No help..

    Any ideas?

Most likely, you're getting this error because of the www prefix. How is your site listed in webmaster tools? www. or without it?

If you are not using a sitemap, then you are missing out on a lot of traffic.

My partner has a website with over 100,000+ pages indexed and he is getting a lot of traffic and adsense money daily.

I tried both, with and without, still getting errors.

I haven't had a good chance to look at it, but I'm ranking no1 and should be pulling in some $$$, but nothing yet :( Damn this day job! I just wanna start seeing the $$$ come in first before I go full time on it.

@Bobbylove: I have 20 pages indexed, but they are the ones before my hosting company decided to delete the files..so I had to start again.

    Still learning....

Sitemap is good for letting the search engines know about ALL of your websites pages so they get searched and indexed.

Ahhh, no I haven't. I thought I had changed it, but realised that www. still comes up. How on earth do I change it as it is pretty much embedded in the webmaster tools. Do I have to delete them off it and start again without the www.??

Thanks much for the advice so far :)

EDIT: deleted and resubmitted. Justing waiting on Google now. Thanks again..

I believe sitemaps are important, especially if your site gets updated alot because you can put that info into your sitemap and google will check every time for it!

Sitemap will not get your pages indexed any quicker, however it will make googles crawls a lot more thorough and complete when it does get there.

i dont think sitemaps are that important, but they take like 3 seconds to set up in wordpress so why would you not do it.

So basicly if my site is 5 pages and ALL of them are indexed already there is no point of adding sitemap? Well maybe the only point adding it is so that none of those pages won't be deindexed lol

It cannot hurt you, but I dont believe there will be any benefits for such a small site.

Sitemaps are so Google knows each page is there, it is to ensure index completeness of larger and dynamic sites. A 5 page site with 5pages index already has a 100% index rate, so you cant improve!

I'm here, there & everywhere. Where do you want m
You're missing out on using just sitemap.xml itself.

If you look closely and hard enough on wordpress, that's if you're using it.. you'll see there are other plugins like:

    - sitemap-image.xml (this plugin will compile all your images together. If you optimised your images correctly, it will be an added boost to your site.)
    - sitemap-video.xml (this plugin is good if you also have videos or use videos on your site).
    - sitemap.xml (this is the most widely used sitemap plugin out there).
    - sitemap-mobile.xml (make sure you have your site mobile ready by installing one of those mobile plugins as well). Mobile marketing will be the next wave so get in on it whilst it's still early.

Having said that, if you're not using the other 3 sitemap plugins out there you're definitely missing out. Think about it, if you haven't used the other sitemap plugins or didn't hear about it before - there's a high chance that your competitors haven't either.

So why wouldn't you use it? A couple minutes to install is not gonna hurt is it?

Whilst those xml plugins are good for google and other search engines, I also use a xhtml plugin like "dagon design". I use it for actual site visitors. It makes it easy for them to see the structure of the site and is user friendly.

There are other xthml plugins out there but Dagon is my choice. Each to their own I guess.

Hope this helps you mate and go install those plugins. It'll do you good.

when your submitting your sitemap to google and adding your site on webmasters......

INCLUDE THE WWW. if you dont google will think its a totally different url....

Google is like a chinaman. Break it down as simple as you can or else they wont get what your wanting them to accomplish
