How much should I charge for an ad on my site?

Someone offered to advertise on my site in October and offered $30/month. Even though I was pretty sure I was under-selling myself, I accepted the offer and put his ad up. It'll be a month on Nov. 25th and his ad has already received 1,044 clicks. I think I'm going to take the ad down after the month is up and issue a refund if he pays me again because I think $30/month is too little.

    Ad metrics:

    • Size: 170x350
    • Location: 4th sidebar widget
    • Clicks per day: 30-40 on weekdays, 60-90 on weekends
    My website metrics:
    • Pageviews per day: 5-10,000 on weekdays, 11-13,000 on weekends
    • Alexa rank: 580k
    • US Traffic: 39-45%
    • TF: 29
    • CF: 34
    • PA: 39
    • DA: 28
    • Niche: Cheats for a game
    • His niche: Community for the same game

How much do you think I should be charging?

How many UV's do you get daily, not pageviews?

I cant give an educated answer but if he was to use adwords to get traffic, it would be like $0.00-$1.00 per click (just guessing). The $30 for 1,044 is less than $0.01 per click. Maybe just message him saying after some revision you decided you want $0.10 per click which would come out at about $100 for 1044 clicks. It would be worth it for him as he is getting good traffic.

30$ is too little. I guess 100-200$ would be fair.

Yeah, I would rather do pay per impressions or pay per click, but I can't be sure whether he'll actually pay me or not when the month ends. Is there any way I can automatically bill him when the ad gets a click?

I think that ads is worth as much as someone wants to pay for it:)
But remember about good tracking, best solution is to use third party i.e. GA - you add to link tracking data, and you both have to agree with this stats.

Just state your price and stop counting how much he earned by posting ad on your site. If your price is $100 tell him it is $100. If he don;t wanna pay, tell him that this is your new price and you can't go lower. Where is the problem?

You can set him up on a subscription through PayPal.

I'd tell him I have someone else interested in the spot who is willing to pay more.

    Give him option such as

    12 months - $468 ($39/month) *must pay in full
    6 months - $414 ($69/month) *must pay in full
    1 month - $89/month (recurring until canceled)

This is just an example but the idea is to make the pricing so attractive for the year he goes for it. While it would only break down to $39 per month for you you just scored almost $500. While going month to month might result in more income for you there's no guarantee that he won't cancel or not renew the ad.

    * Always present pricing in a top down fashion (most expensive first)

The problem is I don't have a price. I don't know how to value the ad on my site. If I oversell myself I'll get no business, if I undersell I'll get little money.

I quite like that idea. Might go for that.

If he can't pay $100 you don't need him, that's not business, that's pocket money

Hawkster put it very nicely. Think about how much per click is it costing him. Even at $.10 per click it would be a no brainer in majority of the niches out there.
Just write to him and say you are going to be charging a higher price. Do some negotiation with him.

Well, how much can you earn with adsense for example? Personally I would probably take that figure then triple it.
