You can put your website with 5k traffic on shared hosting. You don't need VPS.

Buy VPS when you have 50k visits in one day.

a 512 Mb RAM should be enough, if you are hosting a wordpress. I have a WP gettting about 6000 hits daily on a shared host with a 256 Mb limit

For that kind of traffic, shared hosting will be enough. Use a CDN like cloudflare and the amount of resources used will be few less.

i agree shared hosting is prefer on that traffic
but if you still want a VPS expecting more traffic soon
atleast 1024mb ram is a good kick start
choose wisely where to buy a VPS, more vps provider is overselling their servers

If you're using a good CDN with VPS. The VPS with 1GB ram spec is more than enough, but also depent on your website, too. Anyways, 1GB ram is enough if you're using premium CDN and good VPS provider.

    That ^^ exactly.
Unless you run some hardcore scripts for the visitors of course.

512 or 1GB RAM should be more than enough for that much traffic, assuming you're using a CDN. Shared hosting is doable but I wouldn't rely on it when you're bringing in 5,000 visitors a day as the host might get annoyed by resource usage. Better to pay the few extra bucks a month for a low-end VPS for the peace of mind.
