Currently doing SEO for a friend's company and was able to get some keywords on the first page within 1 week. All I had to do was post a couple of articles with the keywords and submit his site to a bunch of directories. Thing is, his domain was registered in 1996. It's 17 years old. Now another friend's company wants me to do SEO. Their website was registered in 2007. Assuming the competition of the keywords are the same, will it not be as easy?

How big of a factor is the age of the domain is what I'm asking

Edit - This is all local SEO by the way. Pairing keywords with locations.

The older the domain the better as long as it has never been penalized and has never been dropped. Older domains are always given more trust from Google and always tend to rank better as well so they're worth the investment.

Old domains without penalties are GOLD. They're SERP magnets, things just seem to work. But all it takes is one slip up and you ruin the reputation, so be extra careful with older domains - they're the golden egg chicks.

I know the older the better. I'm asking to what extent.

    Cool. I shall.

Older domain names used to give google some more trust but nowadays you can see brand new domain names outranking older ones.

The older the domain, the better. Google ranks older domains higher to eliminate fraudulent/newbie websites. As long as the website stayed somewhat active during those years, you should do great! Make sure when supplying backlinks, use a mix of suppliers.

    Older domains are always great.

You mentioned the other site was registered in 2007. Trust me, that's plenty old. Personally, I view a semi-aged domain name as older than one month and an aged domain as older than a year.

How do you check that a domain hasn't been penalised?

I guess type "site:SITENAME.com" in google and see if it's indexed.

This new guy's site is actually from 2004 not 2007. Even better ;)

Also search for SITENAME without any operators or .com, if the domain's good it should be out there somewhere on the SERPs, not necessarily high but you can tell it "wants to rank" even without much content on it.
