If I do not have my keyword in my title/url/heading/content, how much more difficult would it be to rank? My off page seo would be concentrating on the keywords.

    I wouldn't even attempt this.

I have ranked multiple pages containing only product-links from Amazon... It's risky but it still works. It's all about the backlinks in my case.

The way SEO is moving, ranking without on-page SEO is getting a lot tougher. I wouldn't say it's impossible though. It just depends on the competition.

If you need the research for a ebook or website about SEO, then go for it. But other then that its not worth it to try.

On-page SEO greatly helps. It gives you that boost in ranking.

I've ranked a lot of websites with no onsite optimisation. How difficult is it? You'll be throwing lots of links at it. You also need to choose your competition very carefully. Go for KW's that are poorly targeted. Not just with onsite stuff, but also in URL's AND in backlinks, particularly backlinks.

Its much, much harder. With onsite optimisation (and a new crawl by Google) for most KW's I rank within the first 5 pages for onsite stuff alone if I do it perfectly. When you're untargeted, you're starting from nowhere. Its not pleasant. Don't do it if you can help it, and I bet you can help it... so just don't do it ;)

Where you might need to do this is for clients whose websites aren't allowed to be touched. Then all you have is backlinks. Run a very carefully managed backlink campaign.

I saw a website with sucky onpage optimization sitting at position 54, and it had a stronger backlink profile than any of the websites on the first page. On-page SEO is one of the most important factors for ranking. It's like trying to sell a thirsty guy hash.

Think of it this way: Google follows the links to your website keeping the anchor texts and content relevancy in mind, expecting to see a sexy content filled website which it could fap over. But wait, it came looking for some girl-on-girl action and it is lemonparty.org! There goes its boner. Now it'll just recommend the website to people it'll either really hates(page 5) and on page 1 show the websites which didn't make him want to emasculate himself, or when some sicko searches for rare things for which it doesn't have anything, just the external influences.

I hope I made it clear. Cheers.
