If you've been wondering what a statistical analysis of 1 million Google search results says about SEO performance and word count, here's the answer:

    Source

of course, this should not be applied across the board. Some niches tend to focus on shorter pieces of content. Other niches have audiences that prefer longer content.

I remember someone did a test where he just kept adding content to a webpage to see what it does to rankings.

He started off with 500 or 1k words (cant remember) and ended at 5k. The rankings went up as he added more content.

After 3k words he stopped gaining rankings. So 3k words seems to be the peak.

This was only 1 test tho so its not set in stone.

Right and you also have to factor in niche competition.

Something interesting I've noticed is that my longer list articles have any easier time ranking than my other shorter articles, even if the keyword density in my list articles is really low. I may investigate this further as I've noticed a pattern in ranking different types of articles; how-to articles require a different SEO strategy than list articles, and so on and so forth. I may post a case study here on Black Hat World once I've finished collecting the data I need.
