Depends. Of course quantity counts, but if you're doing an excessive number of blog posts on the same blog, day after day, you may end up getting tagged by the ping services as a spammer. I believe Blogger even has a feature that will restrict your account if they think you're posting too often. This can be a problem if you're using an auto-poster like wp-o-matic or rss2blog.

I mostly use WordPress, generally posting 2 or 3 articles on about 20 separate blogs every day. I've cleared all the ping services from my settings, and do manual pings once a day.

If I told you how much I make using this strategy, you probably wouldn't believe me. It's fairly effective, though.

Listen to this guy. I don't know him, but that's some of the best advice you can give to someone just starting out.

Ping manually and only once a day. If you load your blog to ping automatically and then add like 5 articles you can get labeled as a ping spammer and then your pings will begin to be ignored.

    Excellent post.

So if I post two articles a day and have my settings to auto ping is that going to be flagged? Or is that ok?

Two articles per day is relatively safe. I have normally 3 post per blog per day spaced out on auto ping and still not yet flagged.

For backlinks, I think wordpress.com is more useful.

Hell yeah, but if you're peddling something that violates their TOS, (ie Scraper, SEO, Affiliate Marketing, or any Warez) you may wake up one day to find your work got disappeared.

Blogger is also a EXCELLENT choice for blogging platform, IMO. Self-hosted, of course.

There are plenty of posers, liars and fakes to be found in forums like this ... I'd rather keep it low-key.
