Ideally you want to write the article forgetting about keyword density. Focus on content quality and readability.

Only when you make the finishing touches, check density and compare with your competition. That should give you the ideal range.
Only then, if need it, adjust (ad/remove/replace keyword).

At least that is my process.

Try to place keywords 1 to 1.5% based on your article size.
You can place more keywords if it comes naturally while you are writing. Don't try to stuff more keywords.

Are there any general rules of thumb for instance repeat X keyword 2 times per 500 words, etc.? Also, is it recommended to put multiple keywords that you're trying to rank for in one article? Or should you try to only use one keyword that you want to rank for per article?
In general, try to write something natural. Also have primary, secondary keywords while writing. primary keywords - 4% and secondary keywords - 2.5%

Well, there are many ideal formulas, theories to use keywords in your content, but nowadays I don't care about this like I earlier used to do, I realize that many good articles and content on post rank effectively without following these terms, all that matters is a well written engaging content, that's what I focus on, I just have to read the pulse of my audience and write accordingly, yea just doesn't stuff keywords and don't overdo these things, as long as your content make sense, have the retention value and none kinda keyword stuffing your post, the content will rank. for sure

There isn't some general rule about this really, you need to conclude yourself what would be the good amount. If you have a short article try not to add more than 5-7 keywords, if you write a longer one, more than 2000 words or so you can add up to 10 but only if they fit the text naturally and don't sound too generic.

It doesn't matter how many times you put this. Make it natural, thats all.

Are you even ranking for any keyword with this 'strategy'. I don't think so.

Google needs keywords to find the page relevant.. as stupid as it sounds that's how Google works.

They say their engine is the smartest but's actually the opposite because it can't work without keywords.

In many languages, words (nouns) can become different when declined. So, if a keyword is declined in a text, does Google still recognize it as a keyword? I am not sure if declensions change a lot in English.
