How many tier 1 backlinks?

    I'm kinda curious as to how many tier 1 backlinks you guys think would be necessary to rank for a low and a medium competition keyword. Not so sure as to whats overkill and whats just not enough

    It's a truly impossible question to answer in terms of numbers as that's down to the specific page 1 competition of that particular term...

    BUT you can say that a steady link-velocity of growth is very important, and you should definitely used multiple tiers to avoid sending too many links direct to your money site. Multi-tiered linking allows for thousands of links to be built much more quickly, providing a more natural-looking structure while not hitting your main site with high volumes of direct-links.

    If you build slowly and steadily and monitor your progress, you'll see the point to start backing off. A good competitor analysis of the top 10 will help give you an idea of the diversity and scale of linking required for that term.
