Was listening to a podcast today that raised the issue of whether to allow full article or summaries on the home page; the consensus was to set it to summaries to avoid a dupe content penalty and to help the page load faster. Fair enough.

My question, however, is how many posts to show...I know there are trade offs to different numbers, but I'd like to hear what other think.

Sorry, perhaps I should have clarified: I've already got about 16-20 original articles on this site that ranks well and has been up for over a year. So I'm just trying to find the correct structure for the home page rather than trying to figure out how many pages I need to rank a site (though, thanks for sharing that info anyway).

Here is why you should use summaries:

    - Duplicate content issues
    - It makes your homepage looks clean and professional
    - It will raise your clickthroughs, the more options the users are able to see at once, the odds are that the reader will be engage with one of the posts.
    - Most of the bigger blogs tend to use summaries, I'd guess they are doing something right

    =)

Cheers for that Exaalion...I switched over to the summaries today for the dupe content issue and to decrease load time, but the other benefits you listed weren't on my mind...really good points, thanks.

well it's pointless to have too many due to page load times. Depends on the overall design of your website. I usually run a magazine style thme so there are lots of little sections
