I have seen websites ranking for great keywords (where the competitors have better articles) only based on SEO. Do you think content matters much?

Its very important IMHO. Google needs content to determine what your site is about and also I think if your content is crap and you get a high bounce rate then Google is not going to keep your site on page 1 as a result.
Having said that, we all know that links are still king so maybe if everything else is 100% correct then you can get away with crap content.

But my tactic is to make content good as well, then you have better chance of ranking even if everything else is not perfect.

Think of it this way, having good contents make your subsequent SEO efforts 1000% easier.

    It's the foundation.

Forget all the WF talk up there. Google can't understand content. It's an algorithm. You need it for SEO purposes, to determine your targeted keyword ...etc but this doesn't mean it has to make sense. It should make sense for the visitors not google. So, if you have a way to make visitors convert without reading your content, you can easily rank with spun garbage.

I have seen some authority sites rank for very good keyword with very little content.

Content is not the king. But it sure helps.

Content both attracts and keeps the traffic. If your visitors are coming to your site and not seeing what they were searching for, you won't make much compared to your competitors that have better content. Think of your content and copy as the bait and the net for the fish.

Definitely! As a Web copywriter, Meta format and SEO is crucial! Some subject matters are a nightmare to boost ranking on, as the repetition of keywords can sound ludicrous in some cases!

Content matters, number of characters per sentence, number of words in a page..... all contributes to Google ranking :D

Perfectly human, readable, copyscape passed content only matters to the client. Google, not so much.
