The reason why I'm asking is pure curiosity, I figure the crowd here is technically savvy, so I would expect a greater number. I myself am self-employed, good times :)

Flipping burgers waiting to get home to drink a full bottle of Jack Daniels...wait, that doesn't sound too bad.

That's awesome Profesional20, and that's cool that you attribute some of your success to this website. I used to work at EA (yeah that EA) and worked as a multimedia director but hated it in the end. I just can't stand office politics.

Now I have my own digital media company and all is good. But you know, I work more now than I did at my 9-5.

Exactly :) But I prefer Guinness.

Just don't jump into some already used internet ship thinking you'll float...think outside the box and build your own to sail by as the others fail to stay afloat. Then maybe you can stay at home earning a living and call yourself boss.

I gave my one-month notice 2 weeks back. So I'll be self-employed a week or so from now. Good times about to start.

Word. It takes a special kind of person to start their own business, but I do see some people trying to take shortcuts to success. Bottom line, you have to work your a** off. I Think I locked myself in someone's rented room for 1 year.

2 years later, I have a 2-story house and guess what? I'm still locked in a room.

I am self employed from my age of 21 :) I did some offline business, had an office with 40 employees.
Now i am 27 ;) Doing IM as my full time work. Planning to start an office with 10 people to expand my IM presence.
I don't like to work for anyone.

Happily self employed since 1995 and all IM! Of course in the early days of the net there was only one game in town if you wanted to make money.

I try not to be self-employed. Right now my job involves image processing and with an automating software I am meeting my daily quota in 5 minutes. It's a nice way to get great benefits like medical & old age etc. so I don't have to spend any of the actual money I make from my IM activities. It also keeps the IRS off my back.

The hardest part is to find stuff that most people need a day to complete but after that it's just enjoying life or making additional money only for yourself. I also have to regularly decline promotions (being that GOOD, FAST, and EFFICIENT) as managerial position would actually increase the workload many times over

    does fun-employment count?

I got into this while I was looking for work. I wish I learned about it sooner, and I'll probably keep doing it once I get my day job back.
