A title says it all, how many links should I be placing in my 500-word articles? If more than one should the links be pointing to the same page or is it okay if one points to the home page and others point to inner pages?

That depends on where you're posting the article, OP. Where are you likely to post the article?

Actually, you would probably get away with more than two links if the links actually add value or context to the content.

If you pay attention to a typical blog posts at websites like Mashable, you will notice that they have actually quite a number of links out.

A lot of SEOs are under this mistaken assumption that if they put a lot of links on a page then they're going to lose link value.

    No.

You have to remember that your page has too look natural in the eyes of Google.

Real high-quality or credible blog posts and authority pages have a wide number of links.

So, don't look for a magic formula of one or two links.

Make sure that whatever links you put, look as natural as possible.

At the very least, link to your sources.

Pretend that you're writing the content for somebody that you want to buy.

So, from that perspective, you can safely put in more than two links.

Also, if you are going to point to the homepage of a website, make sure that you use the name of the site.

Don't use an anchor text unless the content is on a high-quality website with a lot of authority.

Other than that, you need to make sure that your backlinks look as natural as possible.

There isn't a limit but 3 links should be the ideal one so as not to make it look awkward. 500-word article isn't a lot of words so try to make it natural.

An alternative is to use plugins like YARPP to automate related posts.

    Peace,

If it's a blog post based on heavy research, linking to your sources and references as much as you can won't hurt.

Don't box yourself in a "fixed" number. 2, 4, 6, whatever. Just don't make it look borderline retarded with 1 link every sentence.

No problem, you can link to home page and inner page in 500 words article.

If I make 10 posts linking to my money site I usually link back to homepage and inner page on 3 or 4 of them. Just keep it random and make it look natural. It only looks suspicious if you make it look suspicious.

Actually, any other links can be place elsewhere such as Sidebars. Need be fixated to squeezing within the article.

2 links is often enough for most niches (test heatsync tool=unsubscribed already) and 2-4 would be effective for 1,000 word articles. That is for
regular 2.0 , professionally done sites, the likes OP. Works for my own sites.
