I recently purchased a three keyword pack from cyberzilla and was given some amazing keywords with literally hundreds of long tail keywords.

I've had a sort through and figured out the best 20 or so for each keyword... now I'm wondering how many I should target for a new startup site?

you can target as many of them as you want, if you make a new subpage/article for each one of them. Generally, more articles - more longtails covered - the better, because it will make you a an authority site on this topic in the eyes of google and will boost your rankings on other keywords/longtails in this niche too. So the only limit should be your budget!

Ah ok thats awesome, I can smash out 20 articles in a day and go for 50 or so then :)

I would publish 1 article per day and schedule all other articles through WordPress schedule function to get published at this rate - it seems like google likes it best when it looks like you are writing the text by yourself and then publishing it every day, etc. Just make sure that you mix up the schedule time (random hours:minutes) for every post so it looks naturally. So with 50 articles you will post for 50 days 1 post every day and google will also get used to your posting pattern and will crawl your site far more reqularly - in other words, your site will get more attention from google which is only good!

I'd start off with 5 articles over the next few days. Don't overwhelm yourself. Start working on ranking for those 5 keywords, and as you begin to rank, you can start targeting other keywords as well. I'd also add, try to add an article or two per week targeting new keywords.

The reason I say 5 is that anymore, you may find yourself losing focus and jumping around. Then again, it does depend on the type of budget your working with. More money = target more keywords.
