How many DMs per day is safe, in your opinion?

It's a pointless question because nobody actually knows. And it's based on way more than just age of the account. A 6 month account with 10k karma and a clean record is gonna be able to send more DM's than a 6 month account with 100 karma and 1 warning for bad behavior. The content of the DM also matters a lot. Are you saying "hi" or sending links? It makes a huge difference.
Generally speaking, sending DM's to strangers is a bad idea, on pretty much every social media, so you should focus on strategies that don't require you to be a spammer.

An important overlooked factor is the warming up of the account, regardless of age.
You should start slow and increase DM's progressively within the first two weeks of usage.
If you notice any rate limiting message rest the account for at least a few good hours or even that whole day.
Note down when you started to get limited, and try to spread the messages within the day so they're not posted too fast.
To directly answer your question, a warmed up 6 months old account could go with 30-40 DM's/day without being affected.
If your messages are not making people report your account, then you'll have better chances of not being blocked/banned.
