how many backlinks per article do we need to rank for <10000 comp.

hey i was just wondering guys with experience in this seo game could tell how many backlinks one needs to rank for an average competition keyword , i know it mostly depends on lot of factors like top 10 sites but how much did u need to make to rank for such keywords in general .. 10 , 20 , 30 + ...?

It will depend on the quality of the backlinks. If you have very good backlinks you will only need a few. Otherwise you will need many (and you can get sandboxed!).

I would like someone to answer this with a rough figure for a low ranking keyword against say sites less than a year old with less than pr3. It would give a good idea of a starting point for link building. Unless it's a new site I think getting sandboxed is unlikely especially with these low figures.

just for clarification what do you mean by good links

social bookmarking ?
links from web 2.0 ?
or from article directories?

my guess is that 10-20 anchored text backlinks from articles directories will be sufficient , what do you guys say ?
and how many backlinks per month will get you sandboxed , 1000,2000
please reply atleast with a near answer , tired of hearing general replies ..
