Consistency is the key. Sometimes it takes 1 month, sometimes 1 year. You can never know for sure, but by uploading regularly you show youtube that you are active and will usually be rewarded sooner or later. To your question about whether you should make shorts: Yes, definitely. A little trick: you can simply cut good parts from your long videos and make shorts out of them. That way you don't have to record extra content for the shorts.

it all depends on what level of knowledge and understanding you have on the platform, and the right promotion methods and strategies that can be used to trigger the algorithm.
while consistency + time is the key, generally, it's not always the case.
for example:
people who have a deep understanding of the platform and have mastered the game, can create new channels and make them go viral instantly (within a few days or a few weeks).

YouTube shorts - TikTok short clips of your videos etc.
I know I visited the channel or a video numerous times because I've seen short clips of it on youtube shorts or tiktok, tiktok usually as I dont watch YT Shorts that often.
Hire a freelancer if you dont know how to do it with little bit click bait, post on YT Shorts - TikTok, that should do it. But remember to be consistent, you will probably post 100 of videos, until that 1 that will boost you through the roof.

if you are lucky you will be withing a month or so but often it takes 1-2year sometimes even longer
but the higher quality the videos are the better keywords you use the higher the chance gets
going viral also doesnt bring you long term growth you should more aim towards building a following

The get viral in the gaming niche you need to be good at what you are doing in case you create your own content, otherwise is kind of easy like clips of tricks of pro players, warzone, fortnite this season people is more interested on it, avoid apex for the moment, hell divers is another game where to get people everyone is pleying it and having fun and they keep adding more content by liverating more planets, you can go regular video and shorts for highlights of the video depedning what game you select you will go for goffy plays and troll people to amazing no scopes everything depend on the audience, casual or try hards.

Nowadays, it's harder; you should definitely have a schedule for the days you post content, and then - as others already said - consistency is the key.
It's sometimes easy to get viral for Short-Format Channels, but you still need a community even after monetizing only with Shorts.

Wow, most of these answers are pretty lacking. It's not just about consistency (in fact, that's NOTHING to do with it), if what you're aiming for is virality. The only way to reach virality is to create a video that ticks off the following:
1. Accessible for most people - content that a lot of people will resonate with
2. Unique & eye-catching - has to grab the viewer's attention
3. Retention - the more retention your vid has, the more Youtube will recommend it to others.
Since you're in the gaming niche, this could both be very hard or easy for you to reach virality. Really think deeper about your video topics.
