I would say that the majority of my posts rank within 3 weeks on average. Occasionally, I find a few really good keywords and rank for the terms and their LSI variants in about a week or 2, but most of the time I don't get that lucky and it takes about month before I get in the top 10. I even have a few posts that took up to 5 months before they started ranking (bad keyword research on my part or the keywords were more competitive).

Pinterest is more like social signal than backlinks. There effects on ranking is still a myth though, some say yes and some say no, i would say don't rely on them too much.

I dont know about pinterest links, are they nofollow?

I dont care for anything that is nofollow, TO ME they are useless and have no value.

If the links are do-follow then I would make some and spam them with a tier 2 to pass all that link juice.

I usually only target low competition keywords, but I already stated the reason for the discrepancy in time; bad keyword research on my part or the keywords were more competitive than I originally thought they were (I should've been more clear about that last bit).

I only unsuccessfully used Pinterest a few times to share links as pins on boards for an affiliate site I had at the time that sold cooking products, so I can't really help you there. I also used them to drive traffic rather than for link equity, but I think they're no-follow anyway with the exception of the profile backlink.

I really and truly believe that it will take everyone a different amount of time to rank. It depends on what you are all doing and how much of a drive you have.

Sharing on twitter/fb/g+ surely help to rank quicker but i don't think pinterest will do much.

When talking about value of pinterest links I see them in context with other similar pin sites. Having a bunch of pin style links pointing to my sites helps a lot. I have had various cases when I was able to get domains up on page one of search results with pin style backlinks, only. However, I also found it depends on the nature of search terms. I could score well with general terms that would describe the nature of popular pictures, but it would be impossible to rank for names, brands, local stuff, etc. Pin backlinks hold value, but they are limited.

With pin links alone it takes me 2 to 3 months to achieve stable results.

For any kind of rankings, prior keyword research is a must. If you can do that digiligently, then ranking for low and medium competition keywords should not take more than couple of weeks. Occasionally, you also might find those tough keywords which otherwise you thought might be easier to rank, that is part of the game. Any backlinks from social media has its value, so go ahead and get them.
