So it appears I have the dreaded google slap as I was on page 2 for a keyword term and now I'm not on any of the first 20 pages...

Is it worth me carrying on with my site or should I start on a new one?

It depends on the reason of the penalty. You have to determine why was your website penalized (Panda, Penguin), make necessary changes to your website and pray that it will help. I had a few websites that recovered from penguin in 6 months while other websites are still penalized.

type this in google:

site:yoursite.com (replace yoursite with your domain)

is your website indexed at all?

Yeah, I'm indexed. I just don't appear on the top 20 pages of google for my target keyword.

When I used to be on page 2 for it :(

what is the reason of your penalty? Normally there are two kinds of penalty
Manual Action ? To find out if your website was penalized by a manual action, go to Google Webmaster Tools and check to see if you have any new notifications. Below you can see an example of an ?unnatural links? message.
Algorithmic Penalty ? To identify what type of algorithmic penalty your website has, you will have to correlate the time period when you lost traffic with the date when a new algorithmic update occurred. For this, you can check Google Algorithm change History.

I don't have my site linked to an analytics account because it's adult and I've been told google will hit my site if it sees it as adult.

I was slapped on Saturday 14th February. I don't see any major change in the google algorithm

The only thing that I have done abnormal with the site is I haven't updated it in a month.

Actually guys I hadn't updated the site in 3 months. Is this why my site has been slapped?

if youre site is still indexed, it could be link loss, or its probably an algorithmic penalty.

are the links that you had still alive? still indexed? (scrapebox makes this easy)

if there is no link loss then it could be over optimized content, over optimized anchors, or both.

it could be google dance, is your site still indexed ? try searching site:yoursite.com
one week is too early to say anything, setup webmaster tools so if there is a manual action taken against your site you will see it there .

Nobody can answer your question without complete info. May be its Google dance, Penalty , links loss etc.

It's probably best to fix the penalties associated with it. There's no guarantee it'll get your site back to the # 2 spot, but it could get you higher in the ranks eventually. But it may take some work.

Don't be. It's an inevitable consequence of relying on SEO traffic. I would start a new site with new content while still trying to recover from the penalty.

I have started an authority site so hopefully that will help in either powering the old google slapped money site or powering a new money site.

If your hosting provider had some down time you didn't notice, this is also commonplace. If that is the case it will return soon.
